About Windows Server
Microsoft Windows Server with full Administrator privileges over Remote Desktop. Built for IIS, Active Directory, MSSQL, and Hyper-V workloads on dedicated KVM cores backed by NVMe storage. Where the desktop editions are licensed per seat, Server is licensed per physical core and ships as Standard or Datacenter — Datacenter is the edition that unlocks unlimited Windows container guests and Storage Spaces Direct, and an in-place upgrade from Standard is one-way. It also drops the Microsoft Store, the consumer apps and the whole Xbox layer, and hands you Server Manager and the role catalogue instead. Remote Desktop is where the two product lines diverge most. Every Server install allows two simultaneous administrative sessions, enough to run the box but not to serve users. A real multi-user session host needs the Remote Desktop Services role, a licensing server, and RDS Client Access Licences bought from Microsoft per user or per device, because CALs are never bundled with the operating system and the 120-day grace period runs out whether or not anyone noticed. Promoting the instance to an Active Directory domain controller carries its own caveats. The server needs a fixed private address and must resolve DNS against itself, existing local accounts move into the directory and stop working the old way, and a single-controller forest has no replication partner, so restoring it from a snapshot risks a USN rollback that silently poisons the directory. Take a system-state backup before running dcpromo. Hyper-V is available because the nodes expose nested virtualization to the guest, but the role still wants RAM headroom for the parent partition and refuses to share a machine with another hypervisor, so VirtualBox and VMware Workstation stop working the moment you enable it.
